Women in Math

WiM at the University of Toronto

Our goal is to build a community for women and gender minorities in math at the University of Toronto. Our activities include monthly tea/lunches, WiM lecture series, and math talk practice sessions. In the future, we plan on also starting a buddy program for students.

The WiM program at the University of Toronto was founded by Sarah Mayes-Tang. Currently, it is organized by Alice Rolf and Vivian He. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for these activities, please email one of the organizers. We explicitly welcome people who identify as being part of a gender minority.

Currently, our activities are for graduate students, post docs, and faculty members in the department. If you are an undergraduate student, check out the AWM University of Toronto Chapter.

AWM x WiM Lecture Series

A lecture series to highlight and celebrate the achievements of women and gender minorities in math. The talks are accessible to graduate students.

Upcoming Talk

Speaker: Kathryn Mann

Title: Orderable groups in algebra, topology and dynamics.

Abstract: This talk will introduce you to the notion of a linearly ordered (also known as left-ordered or right-ordered...) group.  While this seems like a purely algebraic idea (group theory!) and while the algebraic side of the story has been around for a very long time, linear orders also have very interesting connections to topology and low-dimensional dynamics.

Date and Time: February 1, 2024, 5:00pm - 6:00pm

Location: BA 6183

WiM Math Talk Practice Sessions

We aim to create a supportive platform for early career women and gender minorities in mathematics to enhence their presentation skills. During the session, the speaker will practice their talk and receive feedback from the peers.

Please email us if you would like to be a speaker at a practice session.
