All,

Welcome to MAT334! I hope that you are all staying safe and healthy. I am looking forward to working with all of you this term! I wanted to say a few things before classes formally start next week to make sure we are all on the same page.

-- Our first class will be Tuesday, May 5, from 6.00 to 7.00 PM EDT (UTC-4). For those of you not in Toronto, please make sure that you know the difference between your local time and Toronto time!

-- Lectures and tutorials will be held live, and it is important that you attend. If any of you are not able to attend your lecture or tutorial at the scheduled time please contact me (ncarruth@math.toronto.edu) immediately. Attending lectures and tutorials live is a very important part of this course, as it always is with university classes, and I do not intend to make recordings of the lectures available except under special circumstances. Also, quizzes will be held during your scheduled tutorial time, with accommodations possible, again, only under special circumstances.

-- Please make sure that your technology is sufficient. The university has a website here which lists minimum technology requirements. Note that in this course we will also assume that you are able to listen to lectures and tutorials, and that you have a way of producing digital copies of handwritten work. (Being able to type up mathematics is probably not sufficient.) If you have any concerns about techology matters, please write me as soon as possible.

-- At the moment I am planning on holding lectures on Bb Collaborate, which is accessible from the navigation menu at left. This may change depending on how the class goes and the availability of other platforms. Some tutorials and/or office hours may be held using Zoom. Again, if you have concerns about your ability to access either of these platforms, please let me know as soon as possible.

-- I have gotten a few e-mails about prerequisites. Unfortunately I am not able to waive prerequisites by myself, so for questions about prerequisites please contact the mathematics department directly (uginfo@math.toronto.edu). As indicated in the syllabus (see next item), I assume that you have a strong grasp of partial differentiation and line integrals, as these are central to much of what we will do in this course.

-- In addition to Quercus, I will also use this page to post lecture notes and the typescript of the textbook, and to archive announcements. A preliminary version of the syllabus is also available here. (It is not yet complete and additional sections will be added while some of the details may be modified, so I don't recommend saving it anywhere to avoid confusing it with the final version.) Please pay special attention to the section about cheating. (And please don't worry, I only say sharp things when there is dishonesty involved!)

-- I will send out additional information about next week's office hours and a poll to determine the best time for office hours in future weeks, shortly.

Again, I am looking forward to working with all of you! Please let me know if you have any questions, now or in the future.

Nathan
