This page is about TA jobs in the Department of Mathematics at the St. George (Downtown) campus only. Please note that hiring for UTM and UTSC positions is done independently. Please contact those departments for details.

TA Job Listserv

We are often asked when TA jobs are posted and how to get notified when job postings become available. We created a listserv for this purpose.

Note that U of T Listserv only accepts subscriptions if both first and last name are provided in the subscription form.

Hiring Rounds

The Department of Mathematics hires most TAs in two rounds:

Fall/Winter

This is our main hiring round. The hiring follows roughly this schedule:

Specifically, note that we post and fill the positions for fall and winter together. Unlike some other departments, we do not post winter positions separately at a later time.

Summer

This is the much smaller hiring round since our summer course offerings are much more limited. It follows roughly this schedule:

FAQ

This FAQ only addresses points specific to the hiring of TAs in the Department of Mathematics. For more general information, please refer to the websites of the University of Toronto and CUPE3902.

Do I have to be a graduate student in math to be eligible for a TA position?

No. We are a large department. This means that while math grad students (and other students having subsequent appointment guarantees) are often given priority in the hiring process, we consistently need to hire undergraduate students and graduate students from other departments to meet our demand.

Note that you must be enrolled at U of T to be a TA for us.

Can I only be a TA if I am enrolled in a math specialist program?

No. You can be a TA for our courses as long as you know the material of the courses you are applying for. For example, as long as you have taken courses in Calculus, you can be a TA for Calculus. It is NOT a requirement to be enrolled in specific programs or disciplines.

Where do I apply for TA jobs?

All jobs are posted at https://unit1.hrandequity.utoronto.ca. There is a link in each job posting to the application form. Applications sent via email are NOT considered.

I applied for a TA job, what is the status of my application?

Due to the large number of applications, we can't provide individual updates on application status. Please do not email us to check. However, we usually send out a "most positions have been filled" announcement for the main hiring rounds, see above.

I heard that a friend of mine already received a job offer. I didn't receive an offer. Does that mean I am out of the running for a position?

Not all job offers are sent at the same time. Since we need to fill hundreds of TA positions, we often send out offers in several rounds. We continue to fill positions until we send out a message to all applicants that "Most positions have been filled". Only if you received this announcement and you didn't receive an offer by that point does it mean that you will likely not get a position.
