Textbook
Victor Ivrii. Online textbook
It is free, open and open-source and frequently updated.
Coverage
- We will cover (in full or partially) Chapters 1--9.
Tests and Participation
Tests:
All tests together are 80 points worth:
- Term Test 1: Week 5, Ch 2-3 (1 hour, 20%)
- Term Test 2: Week 7, Ch 4 (1 hour, 20%)
- Term Test 3: Week 11, Ch 5-7 (2 hours, 20%)
- Each test will be in person as Crowdmark Administrated Assessment. See details for each Test in its description. All Tests are listed in Modules and in Calendar.
- For each Test (Term Test 1 or Term Test 2) in addition to the Main Sitting there will be an Alternative Sitting in the same day and a Deferred Sitting, one week after the Test. You are eligible for a Deferred sitting, if you submit a Doctor's Note or ACORN self-declaration covering the regular day of the Test. After this you must either take a Deferred sitting or submit a Doctor's Note or ACORN self-declaration covering the corresponding day.
- If you miss some Tests due to medical or other legitimate reasons (that is, you need to submit justifications for both main and deferred sittings), their weight will be shifted to the remaining Tests (including Final Exam).
Participation 20%: .25 hours for each 1 hour lecture or special office hour attended, increased to .5--1 hour for meaningful activity
Marking scheme
Your Final Mark will be computed as follows:
- FM = min [T1 + T2 + T3 + TP, 100]
where FM is
- Tn are your Test marks (each of these tests is worth 24 points), n=1,2,3
Miscellaneous
Reporting an Absence
Students who are absent from academic participation for any reason and who require consideration for missed academic work should report their absence may use
See details here.
Auditing the course
- If you are planning to take Deferred Exam, you need to be included in the Quercus Roster as an Unregistered Student. Please contact Class Coordinator even if someone in administration included you. Inclusion as an Observer is insufficient as a system does not consider Observers to be students, grades are not assigned to them and they are not synchronized with Crowdmark.

Aftermath
Recommendation letters
- I am writing recommendation letters to Graduate Studies for students who took with me either MAT334 and/or APM346 and got at least 85 in one of them..
- Sending request to me please indicate all classes you took with me and when. I am not writing letters based only on MAT244 (but you must indicate this class if you took it with me).
These Outlines correspond to FAS policies as September 3, 2024. They will be updated if policies change.
