Read sections 2.5, 2.6, and 2.7 of the text (Thomas/Finney).

Make sure you are able to solve all the core problems in these sections.

Write up the following problems and hand them in:

section 2.5: 14, 16, 26, 60, 64, 68, 70, 74, 76

section 2.6: 14, 24, 32, 42, 54, 64, 67

section 2.7: 8, 12, 18, 22, 28, 34

Do the following problems in maple and hand in your print-outs. Go through the sample worksheet for help.

Problems with Maple? Here are the commands I used.

I know that many of you have been having problems with maple. I've asked around and have heard that sometimes maple has problems plotting more than four functions simultaneously. So I'll stop asking you to do this. If you're having problems with maple crashing/freezing more than once on you then try saving your work as a *.mws worksheet and working on a different computer. If you're having problems printing, then try this as well.

• Problems 14, 16, and 26 in section 2.5. Use maple to check that you did your differentiation correctly.

• Problem 54 in section 2.6. Use maple to plot the points that satisfy the equation, as well as the tangent line and normal line through the point given.

• On the harmonic oscillator. Take the frequency w=1. Assume an initial position x_0 = 1 and initial velocity v_0 = 1. Find the solution x and its velocity v. Call them x1 and v1. Now change the initial position to x_0 = 1.5. Find the new solution x and its velocity v. Call them x2 and v2. Now change the initial position to x_0 = 2. Find the new solution x and its velocity v. Call them x3 and v3.

  Plot x1, x2, and x3 on the same graph, over t=0..10.

  Now compute the energies of (x1,v1), (x2,v2), and (x3,v3). Plot the energies as a function of time.

  Discuss the solutions and the energies.
