Stephen Hawking's visit to the University of Toronto
On April 26 and 27,
Prof. Stephen Hawking of
Cambridge
University gave two lectures at the
University of Toronto.
On April 26, he gave a lecture entitled "Inflation: An Open and Shut Case"
at the Medical Sciences building for a graduate-level audience.
On April 27, Prof. Hawking gave a general audience lecture at Convocation
Hall entitled "The Theory of Everything",
which was organized by the Global Knowledge Foundation (a newly created
student group at the University of Toronto) with sponsorship from the
British High Commission, Discovery Channel
Canada, and the University of Toronto -- including the Departments of
Physics,
Mathematics,
Chemistry,
Astronomy, and the
Canadian Institute for Theoretical
Astrophysics.
Here are some links to start you off with.
- The complete transcript of Prof. Hawking's
general talk on April 27, which appeared in
The Bulletin.
- Here is also the transcript from his talk
Inflation:
An Open and Shut Case.
Alternatively,
you may listen to
the entire talk (63 min, RealAudio) and see the slides from the talk.
- The Discovery Channel (in Canada) has
highlights of the general lecture and
will include a summary of the opening of the
Sudbury
Neutrino Observatory on April 29 which he attended.
- Of the three Toronto newspaper media outlets which covered the
general talk, I found the article from the
Toronto Star
to be the most enjoyable.
- Wayne Hayes writes an excellent summary of the
general lecture.
