Subject: Toronto Early Bird Results
The Toronto Scrabble Club extended its annual tournament to include
a seven-game early bird event for the first time this year. I am
honoured to be able to report that in recognition of late club member
and inveterate tournament player Leah Katz's enthusiasm for and
promotion of the game of Scrabble, we have dedicated the early bird
to her memory and it will henceforth be known as the Leah
Katz Memorial Scrabble Tournament. As I said in my opening remarks
this morning, if ever there was a player who thought that playing
twelve games in one weekend just wasn't enough of a good thing, it
was Leah. May she rest in peace.
The LKMST was held at Earl Bales Community Centre, the home of the
Toronto club, and was directed by Lisa Deift, Lisa Kessler and myself,
with refreshments provided by Lynda Wise. Technically speaking, it was
run as six rounds of Boys-Fontes Swiss followed by one KOTH with
repeats, using my 'tsh' Perl script. From start to finish the event
took eight hours and nine minutes, including one-hour lunch break and
a prize ceremony. 70% of a CAD 30.00 EF was returned in prize money,
including 35% to top place; prizes went to 4th place in A Division and
3rd place in B Division.
Here then are the results of the First Leah Katz Memorial, including
estimated new ratings. Congratulations to division winners Fern Lindzon
and Gene Rawlins, thanks to all who participated and contributed.
