University of Toronto
MAT198F - LINEAR ALGEBRA (Enriched)
Fall 1999

Course Description
This course will basically cover the same material as MAT188 (that is: matrix arithmetic,
determinants, vector spaces, inner product spaces, diagonalization) but the precision and rigor
will be emphasized and in general you may expect more challenging questions on your quizzes,
on the test and on the exam.
The first half of the course may be familiar to you from your OAC courses in high school and
you should not have major difficulties in absorbing it. The second part of the course is much
more demanding as we proceed from familiar to unfamiliar and from concrete to abstract.

Section Instructors
By now you should be scheduled to one of the following sections:
                   LO101  - R. Luus                    LO201 - R. Stanczak
                   LO301  -  S. Jaimungal           LO401 -  S.Homayouni

Textbook
H. Anton, C. Rorres Elementary Linear Algebra: Application Version, 7-th edition.

Tutorials and Quizzes
There will be one hour of tutorials every week starting September 20, 1999. Quizzes will be
held every second week and typically will be 25 min. long written at the beginning of your
tutorial. Quizzes will be given and marked by your tutor. Your final mark from quizzes will be
adjusted so that each tutorial section will have approximately the same average at the end of
the semester.

Midterm Test
There will be  one midterm test, 1 hour long, scheduled during the week of November 8th.
The test will be set by your instructor and marked by the tutor. The final mark from the test
will be adjusted so that each lecture section will have the same average. The time and the
place of the test will be advertised by your instructor or you may visit the home page.

Grading Scheme
The common final examination will be 2 1/2  hours long and will be graded out of 100. It will
be set and marked by all instructors. The composition of your course mark will be as follows:
                               Quizzes                     20%
                               Midterm Test            20%
                               Final Examination    60%

Missed Term Work
Students who miss any quiz or the test, for whatever reason, must submit petitions for
Consideration in Course Work to their instructor not to their tutor.
