[ Aug 13, 2009 ]

This site just has moved to the new web server.
This new server is much faster and runs much newer software (Apache, PHP, MySQL) than the old one. However there are some compatibility issues. They were identified in advance and will be resolved very quickly.

For testing and debugging purposes we temporarily use your 2008-2009 Tournament of Towns results and 2009 Kangaroo results instead of 2009-2010 Tournament of Towns results and 2010 Kangaroo results respectively. Please do not report this as an error!

New registrations will be enabled September 1, 2009.

Tournament of Towns

The dates are not fixed yet by the Central Committee but they will not be very different from dates in 2008-2009 season and all events are planned for Sundays. We will post dates for 2009-2010 season as soon as we know them.

Mathbattle

We will start working on it only after Fall Round of Tournament of Towns. Do not register you team before special announcement (mid-October) as for testing and debugging purposes we temporarily use team slists of 2008-2009 season and in the end of testing this list will be emptied.

Math Kangaroo 2010

We will start working on it only only after January 1, 2010. Please, do not send cheques until February 1, 2010. For those who paid in 2009 but missed competition your payment has been transfered to 2010.

[ Aug 13, 2009 ]

Thanks

  • to Cristina Rosu (University of Toronto Schools) who reported two rather unpleasant bugs due to migration. Bugs has been fixed.

Database updated

Grades

Every student' grade was increased by 1 and should reflect the grade in 2007-2008 season.
  • In particular, grade=13 means that you just graduated.
  • If your grade changed differently (for example, you jumped 1 grade or you decided to stay in grade 12 one more year) you should request change through profile management.
    Deadline: September 10, 2007.
  • Those who graduated 1 year ago (grade=14) have been deleted from active database.

Check your data

We request everyone to log into their accounts and then to go to profile pages to check that everything is correct.
  1. Correct what you can correct (through web form),
  2. Note that using updated profile pages you can subscribe to Knagaroo and/or Tournament of Towns messages and also block general messages;
  3. Request changes (also through web form) for everything else. Please, do not play with this and do not repeat requests!
We are especially concerned in your name, grade, school:
  • Your name should be correctly spelled and be in the correct format: Joe Doe is correct, Joe DOE (and everything similar) is not!
  • Your school should be properly spelled and contain no abbreviations: Don Mills Collegiate Institute is correct, Don Mills CI is not.
    Deadline: September 10, 2007.
  • Please note that due to technical reasons ' should be replaced by # (issuing certificates we will convert # to ')
Previous years we spent a lot of time fixing manually the wrong/abbreviated spelling for Winners Certificates. We cannot do it anymore. If your name/school is in the wrong format your certificate will not be issued.

  • Person to ask: Ms. Diana Leonardo, Front Desk Secretary. Name yourself and advise if you are winner of Tournament or Kangaroo or both. Note that there separate certificates for Kangaroo in Canada and in Toronto.

    Math Kangaroo

We entetered into our database all cheques we had received. Now logging to your account and going to your Kangaroo page, you can see the confirmation.

There are few cheques we could not identify reliably. If you sent cheque before Thursday and on the page you cannot find a confirmation, please advise us by email oz@math.toronto.edu.

Payments on the spot will be accepted only as an exception and only by the cheque.

There are some students (from Ontario International Institute) whose payment was received but who have not registered so far. Please do it ASAP. Since we monitor our database regularly we will see your registration and adjust your records.

    Schedule of MathClub in March

    March 12 Lectures (11:00 - 1:00, Rm BA 1220 )
    • Double Counting Through Charts
Yufei Zhao, Don Mills CI, student

What do we get when we start to count the number of check marks in a chart? If we do it right, then we can discover a lot of interesting properties! In this lecture, I will discuss how to tackle difficult combinatorial problems using a simple yet powerful technique that can help us to visualize the configurations
    • Knots and Polynomials
      Dr. Alexander Ivrii, CRM, Montreal

Take a piece of string, tie a knot and glue the two ends. Can you untangle it, i.e. deform it to a knot which looks like a circle? Try it at home and you will see that for some knots this seems to be impossible. But can you really prove this? Or maybe there is a very clever procedure to untangle every knot? And if not, which knots can be untangled and which cannot? In this talk I will try to answer all these questions and more! Ah, the polynomials will appear as certain knot invariants, but you have to wait till the talk to find out.

My comments. A-Level Fall Round Problem Set is challenging, Criteria of grading are tough; with few exceptions, most of the participants got less points than on O-Level.
Don't be discouraged by your results!
You have chances to improve your results on Spring Round. What is the most important, that you are learning and benefiting from your experience. Given the time and the determination, there will be results!

November 28, 2003. If you interested to attend Solution Session of A-Level (in addition to learning solutions from download page), please, advise me by answering on Member Poll.

November 28, 2003. I plan to continue Preparation Sessions (check this page for announcements).
If you are not involved directly in MathBattles (which I consider the excellent preparation for the Tournament), you could learn (and have fun) just watching the Games.

November 13, 2003. Lecture on solutions of O-Level and answering questions is held Sunday November 16 at Sanidford Fleming Building, room 3201

11:00      Juniors (problems #1, 2, 4, 5)
11:30 Juniors-Seniors   (problem   #3 Juniors = #1 Seniors)
11:40 Seniors (problems #2, 3, 4, 5)
12:15 Guest Lecture Professor A.Khovansky
Selected Topics in Geometry

After Session, you have a chance to look at your graded paper.

Please, log to Members Area to advise me if you are planning to attend O-Level solution session, planned for November 16, Sunday.

November 13, 2003. The first Math Battle of the season is planned either Sunday November 30 or Sunday December 7, 2003. So far 9 teams registered.
