How to write a proof Here are some notes on what proofs are and how to write them.

Solutions to some problems from Chapter 1 The problems in the book marked with a diamond have worked solutions in the partial solution manual that you can buy in the bookstore. Here are the solutions to the non-diamond problems of Chapter 1. Please let me know if you find any mistakes in them!

A mistake in the book One of your classmates, Ying Di, found a mistake in the book. In example 10 on page 45, the basic solution X1 should be (3 1 0 0 0)^T. Not, as written, (3 1 0 0 1)^T. This mistake occurs in the representation directly above --- the (5,1) entry of the matrix that the scalar r is multiplying should be a 0, not a 1.

Information about Term Exam The test contains 10 multiple choice questions and 4 open questions with two parts each. The understanding of all concepts will be primary requirement. Half of the test comes from sections 5.1 and 5.2 (with Insert A counting as a part of 5.1).

A mistake in the book In the proof of theorem 2 on page 319, the book refers to "theorem 5 in section 5.5". This should be theorem 5 in section 5.2.
