Open House on Graduate Studies
Saturday Feb 21 9am-5pm
Mathematics and Computing Building, University of Waterloo

The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo is hosting an Open House on Graduate Studies, to be held at the Mathematics and Computing Building on Saturday February 21 from 9am-5pm. This event is intended for graduating students who are interested in doing graduate studies in the area of one of the four mathematics departments in the Faculty of Mathematics (applied mathematics, combinatorics and optimization, pure mathematics, statistics and actuarial sciences). We will feature research presentations by faculty members, opportunities to talk to staff, faculty and graduate students about graduate studies in the Faculty of Mathematics at UW and guided tours of parts of the University of Waterloo.

If you are interested in attending please register by sending e-mail to math-openhouse@uwaterloo.ca no later than February 12. Space is limited and registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

At the end of January, we will set up a website with more details about the Open House event, including the schedule of speakers, the rooms being used and directions for travelling to Waterloo. This will appear as a link on the following Faculty of Mathematics Graduate Studies webpage.

You can also find out more about graduate studies in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo by visiting the websites of each of the four departments and following the link to "graduate studies".

The Faculty of Mathematics and the University of Waterloo is pleased to offer an outstanding academic environment for graduate studies, covering a broad range of the most exciting research topics, provided by faculty members who are dedicated to teaching excellence, all offered in a very congenial atmosphere.

Please register no later than February 12, as space is limited. We hope that you will join us on February 21!

Jan 23/04 The U of T Undergraduate Mathematics Competition
To: Undergraduates of Mathematics
From: E. Barbeau

1. The fourth annual undergraduate mathematics contest will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2004 between the hours of 11 am and 2:30 pm. I am booking a room on the second floor of Sidney Smith hall.

Just so I can get a handle on the numbers, let me know if you are planning to take part. Copies of previous years examinations are available.

2. Because of a somewhat irregular schedule this term, I am not able to make a regular commitment to problem sessions. However, I will be around for at least part of reading week, and know that I will be on campus during the first week of March. If any of you are interested in problems sessions, let me know the times that you would prefer and I can try to set something up. Also, if the times are right, Mark Braverman, a graduate mathematics student, would be interested in taking part.

I suggest that you look at the problems sections of the following journals: Crux Mathematicorum, American Mathematical Monthly, Mathematics Magazine, College Mathematics Journal, or get on the net and find some problems that interest you. Let me know what they are, and then I can circulate them. This will mean that if we do meet, we will have something to talk about.

Jan 21/04 Reviving U of T's Math Publication, The 007

There has been some interest in reviving U of T math's publication from days of yore, the 007, and MASSU has money to spend on a publication. So, if you're interested in writing something for the 007 or in being involved in some other way, we're holding a casual meeting this Friday, January 23, during our regular games afternoon, from 2-5 in SS 5017B. In particular, we'd love people who have experience with campus newspapers or other publications. If you can't attend the meeting but are interested in taking part please email massu@math.utoronto.ca
