MAT135Y TERM-TEST 1
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4,
2009
1. Term-test 1 will cover everything in the
Course Outline from the beginning (including Chap. 1 and Appendix D) up to
and including Section 3.6 (Derivatives of Logarithmic Functions). Note that Inverse
Trigonometric Functions are included. Any topic not in the Course Outline will
not be on the test, of course. You should review all the questions in the
relevant Problem Sets. You should remember definitions (e.g. definition of the
derivative, definitions of the inverse trig. functions) and be able to use
theorems you have learned (e.g., the Chain Rule). You should also remember the
standard mathematical formulas and basic mathematical facts, e.g., cos(0)=1, sin(0)=0, sin(2x)=2sin(x)cos(x), arctan(0)=0, ln(e)=1,
etc. You will not be asked to prove Theorems, if the proof is a
"theoretical" proof. However, if the proof is basically a
computation, e.g., proving that the derivative of sin(x) is cos(x), then
you will be expected to know the proof. Also, you may be asked to find f '(x)
from first principles (i.e., by using only the definition of the derivative).
The test will have some challenging questions, which require you to think very
carefully.
2.
Term-test 1 consists of two parts:
PART A (50 marks): 10
multiple-choice questions. 5 marks for a correct answer, 0 for no answer or a
wrong answer. You are not required to justify your answers in Part A.
PART B (50 marks): 7 written
questions. You will be required to present your complete solutions in a neat
and logical fashion, showing all your computations/justifications.
3. Term-test 1 will be closed book. All books,
notes, pencil cases, calculators and scrap paper of any kind must be
placed on the floor at the front of the exam room before the start of the test.
You are advised to use pencil to answer all the test questions. So bring
several sharp pencils and a good eraser, and also a ball-point pen (for signing
your signature). Remove the pencils from your pencil case before the start of
the test, since pencil cases are not permitted to be placed on your desk. Also,
bring your student ID card and please remember your Tutorial Code
(e.g., M4A, R5C, F2D, etc.) and the name of your TA. You are required to
write these on your test-paper. You can find out your official Tutorial Code
and the name of your TA by visiting the MAT135Y Website. All cell-phones must be completely turned
off during the test and NOT to be placed on your desk! You
are not allowed to use your cell-phone in any manner. For example, using it as
a clock is strictly forbidden. The use of any other electronic devices such as
iPods, compact disc players, pagers, etc. are also strictly forbidden.
