6183 Troubleshooting

Prepared by Victor Ivrii (with some editing by Emile LeBlanc)

  1. You selected Computer but both the Left Screen (with respect to the audience) and the Left Desktop Monitor (with respect to speaker) are dark
    1. Have you selected "Left Screen"?
Let's check: Which Screen went down? It should be one nearer the podium.
      • If "Yes" go to 2.
      • If "Not": select Computer again, select Left Screen. Now both Left Monitor and Left Screen should work.
However you need to get rid of the "Right" screen. To do this go to "Volume and Screens" control pane, mute "Right" screen and also "Pull up" "Right" screen.
    2. Now you checked that the "Left" screen is selected, but still both the Left Screen and the Left Monitor are dark. Next check if Computer is running: open the Cabinet and check that the button on the front of the Computer is illuminated. If not, press it and start the Computer.
    3. Now you checked that the "Left" screen is selected and that the Computer is on, but still both the Left Screen and the Left Desktop Monitor are dark. Let's check that Desktop Monitor is switched on (indicator light); if not let's switch it on. Let's also go to "Volume and Screens" and press "Left Display". If nothing improves this is a hardware problem and you need to report it.
  2. The Left Screen is working, but the Left Desktop Monitor is dark. Switch it "On".
  3. The Left Desktop Monitor is working but the Left Screen is dark. First, go to "Volume and Screens" and press "Left Display". If it does not fix the problem then someone messed up with remote control. Look at the bottom of this page.
  4. You selected Computer and "Both Screens" but there is a problem with the "Left" Screen and/or Monitor. Ignore "Right" and follow steps A-C.
  5. You selected Computer and "Both Screens" but there is a problem with the "Right" Screen and/or Right Monitor while the "Left" Screen and Left Monitor are fine. Reselect "Both". If this does not help follow steps A-C (with "Right" instead of "Left") but you know that Computer is "ON" so do not check it.
  6. You selected Laptop but both the selected Screen and the corresponding Desktop Monitor are dark. Check if you connected your laptop properly. Also follow the same steps A-C as with the Computer but instead of booting the Computer reboot your Laptop. Or better yet shut it down and boot again. Also if you need just one screen try to select other screen.
  7. Treat Document Camera, Video Conferencing Camera, and the DVD Player the same way but remember that VCC and DVD Player output only to Screens and not to the Desktop Monitors.
  8. Problem with Data-Projector

  9. Now you think that the problem is with the particular data-projector: switching to another data-projector solved your problem and/or the corresponding Desktop Monitor shows the image but the Screen does not. Still, try another input device with the particular data-projector (Using a Laptop or the Computer is good because you can check that the corresponding Desktop Monitor displays an image.)
  10. Still no luck? There is a chance that someone messed up with Remote Control. As the last resort we need to use it. Since Remote Control affects only data-projectors use it only if corresponding Desktop Monitor shows correct output. You already followed step H, right?
  11. Take Remote Control out of Cabinet (there are two of them for Data Projectors, so take either. Direct it towards the Data-projector in question and

Playing nicely

  1. Please, leave the System as it should be: Computer logged off but running, Document Camera switched off and in its closed position, Cables and other hardware in the Cabinet Drawer, Cabinet locked, and no garbage or chalk on the podium.
  2. If you forgot to log out from the Computer or to put the Cables and other hardware where they belong or to close Cabinet before logging out of the System or if you switched off the Computer, please, log in to the System again, perform the needed tasks and log out again.
  3. And you have not played with the Remote Controls, right?
  4. It would be nice if the Speaker or the Speaker's host or anyone who will definitely be using the Seminar Room not only read all the instructions but also try to follow basic instructions, so this person would know what to do.
  5. It would be even nicer if this person had a rehearsal, at least 24 hours before the talk so that if there are problems there is sufficient time for the staff to investigate them. Often the Speaker's host may have to be trained in the usage of this room. Do not expect someone to be able to help you if you do not ask for help at least 24 hours in advance.
  6. Please report any problems that you cannot solve so that they can be investigated.
  7. Please do not send Ida (or other staff) to get external help unless you have carefully tried to follow the instructions.
  8. And you are sure that you have not played with Remote Controls, right? There is no point in using the built-in laser pointer: it does not work well from the podium due to the angle and you could accidently press the wrong button and get into trouble.
  9. A person who plays with the Remote Control and changes settings should not resist the punishment no matter how cruel and unusual it is.
