6183 for Dummies

Prepared by Victor Ivrii (with some editing by Emile LeBlanc)

How to use the data-projectors in 6183

  1. Touch (a simple "tap" may not be sufficient) the control panel screen; it will light up.
Enter the Code [****] and touch "Enter".
(Please go to the front desk in the main office to get the Code.)

  2. The system will start and the Cabinet will unlock.
You are at the Main Control Pane. You need to decide what do you want to do.

    1. You want to use the built-in Computer and project on one screen:
(this is the most commonly used and recommended setting).
      1. Select "Computer". You are on "Screen Selection Pane".
      2. Select (the) Screen that you want to use.
        • Do not select "Right" (you will not be able to log in). "Right" means "Near the Doors",
        • Select "Left". "Left" means "Near the Podium"
The selected screen will lower and the projector will activate.
      3. Using the keyboard and mouse log into Computer as "seminar" (the password is available from the front desk).
      4. You can access the Internet and/or plug a USB drive into one of the two slots near Control Panel (actually, you can plug into both USB drive slots).

Note: Use the mouse belonging to the Computer.

You can use the built-in Computer and project onto both screens:
In step 2.A.b select "Both Screens". These screens will not be identical

    2. You want to use your Laptop and project on one screen:
      1. Select "Laptop". You are on "Screen Selection Pane".
      2. Select (the) Screen that you want to use.
        • "Right" means "Near the Doors",
        • "Left" means "Near the Podium"
The selected screen will lower and the projector will activate.
      3. Connect your Laptop using VGA cable taken from the Cabinet.
If you use Apple Powerbook, iBook, MacBook or MacBook Pro you probably need an adaptor supplied with your Laptop (different Laptops have different outputs and different adaptors are needed).
If you use your Laptop also as an audio source, use combined VGA and Audio (minijack to minijack) connector.
      4. Boot you Laptop. Do not boot it before (a)-(c) (it may not negotiate the resolution correctly).

You can use your Laptop and project onto both screens:
As in 2.B.b above but select "Both Screens". These screens will be identical

Important Note You can use the University's wireless Internet network if you have previously configured your laptop according to these instructions. If you wish to use the wired connection in the Seminar Room then your laptop has to be registered on the departmental network. You will need to give your MAC address (if you have not already done so) to Marco in advance. Follow how to discover your MAC address if necessary. When you are set up then you can simply attach to the Internet via the blue RJ45 ethernet cable on the Podium.

    3. You want to use Document Camera and project on one screen:
      1. Select "Document Camera". You are on "Screen Selection Pane".
      2. Select (the) Screen that you want to use.
        • "Right" means "Near the Doors",
        • "Left" means "Near the Podium"
The selected screen will lower and the projector will activate.
      3. Bring the Document Camera into the working position (see the figure on the left below) if it is in the closed position (see the figure on the right below), note that the central arm with the lenses locks; correct the head (with the lenses) position so it looks directly down.
      4.

      5. Switch it on using Master-Switch in the far-right corner.
      6. Check that the "Main" button in the near-left corner is "On" (light).
      7. Put a paper, or transparency or anything else on the glass.
      8. Select the correct Lamp using the "Upper:Base:Off" button in the near-right corner.

      9. Document Camera Controls

      10. Rotate the image on the Screen if necessary using the "Image Rotation" button.
      11. You can use the Document Camera and project on both screens:
As in 2.C.b above but select "Both Screens". These screens will be identical
    4. Camera (VCCamera) is a nice but currently rather useless toy. If you want to use it figure out by yourself.
    5. Built-in DVD player. It is in the Cabinet. Again, if you want movies, figure out by yourself.
    6. AUX is untested, most likely unneeded and possibly unsupported.
    7. If you want to suspend all video presentations but not to log out (for example, if you are using the wireless microphone) select "Lecture" (the icon looks like lips) from the Main Control Pane.
    8. If you want to use wireless microphone (perhaps in combination with one of the above) take it from the cabinet, attach the transmitter to your belt and the mike to your collar; turn the mike on by pressing the button on the transmitter (don't forget to turn it off after). It is somewhat difficult to position mike on the collar so that it picks your voice reliably.
  3. After you have finished please put everything you took from the Cabinet back in the proper drawer.
  4. If you used Computer then "Log Out" but do not "Shut Down".
  5. Then switch the system off:
    1. If you are on Main Control Pane ("Main Menu"), press the "System Off" button and then reconfirm your selection,
    2. If you are in the "Volume and Screen Controls" Pane, press "Main Menu"
    3. If you played with the Camera press Cancel or Quit or whatever.
The System will shut off and the Cabinet will lock.
  6. If you used Document Camera make sure to switch it off using Master Switch (in the far right corner) and pack down the arms.

Using two video sources

You can use any two sources at the same time and project them to different screens:
Say you want to use the built-in Computer and your Laptop at the same time, follow (A) then (B).
Select different screens ("Left" for Computer and then "Right" for Laptop). The later selection overrides the previous one.
If you want to use Computer as an audio source follow (B), then (A):
there should be just one audio source with the exception of the wireless microphone.

Using remote control

We have a wireless remote control. Plug USB adapter to your laptop or to USB slot of Resident PC. Turn it on. Use Back and Forward arrows and a Laser Pointer (Up and Down arrows are not useful with the standard software).

Warnings

  1. Do not go to "Volume and Screens Controls" pane unless you know what are you doing and what is your purpose (change sound volume especially for microphone is often needed but screens go up and down automatically).

This Control Pane consists of two parts:

  2. Important: Please do not shut down Computer.
  3. IMPERATIVE: PLEASE DO NOT USE REMOTE CONTROLS FOR PROJECTORS.
There is a very little reason to use them and there is a large possibility that settings may become very messed up. Use wireless remote control for computer instead.
  4. Little white buttons surrounding touch-screen are very important: if you really want to press something but have no reason to do this, press one of them (the only effect would be a satisfaction from the fact that you managed to do something which did not cause any harm).
