I got my Ph.D. at Harvard in 1950; I got tenure for the
first time when I arrived at the University of Toronto in 1962.
(Tenure may have protected me against firing, but proved
ineffectual as protection against being made Emeritus.)

I have done research on matrices and operators
(especially the kind that are both), but at times also on
other analytic and geometric matters. Yes, I am the Davis of
Davis-Kahan; and of Davis-Knuth; and of Bhatia-Davis; some of
my best work has been in collaboration with such people and
with my colleagues; but not with Paul Erdos.
What have I done for you lately? Well, would you believe
variance <= (max - average)(average - min)?
I am Editor-in-Chief (and was formerly Reviews Editor)
of The Mathematical Intelligencer-- which you may have seen,
but just in case, I attach a recent cover.
