Reprise Program

January to August 2012, for students taking First-Year Calculus Courses on the St. George Campus

Introduction

The Reprise Program is for students who are doing poorly in the first term of their first year calculus course. The program is made up of two half courses and together they replace a full year course.

MAT123H1S plus MAT124H1Y replace and are equivalent to MAT133Y1Y,

There is no Reprise Program for MAT137Y1Y, or MAT157Y1Y. Students enrolled in these courses who are doing poorly may opt for the Reprise Program for MAT133Y1Y.

    • Students must have written the first term test and obtained at least 20%.

In other words:

In order to register for the Reprise Program you must still be enrolled in one of the Y courses listed above and meet the grade requirements stated above. Do not drop your Y course before registering into the reprise program!

UTM and UTSC students are NOT ALLOWED to take the Reprise courses!

Reprise Program Details

MAT123H1S starts the week of January 9, 2012, after the results of the December term tests have been posted, and finish April 5, 2012. Test results from MAT133Y1Y will be posted on the course website.

MAT123H1S meets on Thursdays, 6-9 p.m., in SS 1087.
The course will have a two-hour final exam during the April-May examination period. The course has no tutorials.

MAT124H1Y spans both the first and secd term of the summer 2012 semester. It meets on Wednesday evenings, 6-10 p.m., and this includes a one-hour tutorial. A three-hour final exam will be given during the August examination period. Some of the questions on the final exam will be based on material covered in MAT123H1S.

All dates for MAT124H1Y ARE TENTATIVE. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP YOURSELF INFORMED!

Fees: There is no fee for registering to MAT123H1S, however as you will be enrolling in courses during the summer session you will be charged the appropriate tuition and registration fees for MAT124H1Y.

Once both half courses of the Reprise Program have been successfully completed, the courses will be equivalent to the "parent" course. On the transcript it will be recorded as two half courses. The grade obtained in each course will affect the GPA according to Grading Regulations as stated in the Arts & Science Calendar.

You are responsible for being informed of all exclusions for all Reprise Courses which are listed in the Arts & Science Calendar.

Important Points

  • If a student takes and fails the first half course of the Reprise Program, he/she cannot RETAKE that course again.
  • If a student fails the second half course of the Reprise Program, he/she may re-take the course the next time it is offered (which is usually the following year).
  • If a student passes the first half course of the Reprise Program and then decides to enrol in one of MAT133Y1Y/135Y1Y/136Y1Y, then the full year course becomes an EXT extra course which may be used to fulfill program requirements, but will have no effect on your GPA.
  • The Reprise Program courses are never assigned as transfer credits to incoming students from another university or institute. Furthermore, students who come into another university with half transfer credit in first year calculus are not allowed to enrol in MAT124H1Y.

How to Enrol in MAT123H1S

Assuming you fulfill the requirements listed above, the last day to request a Reprise course is January 22, 2012.

Enrolment controls are in effect for MAT123H1S and enrolment must be approved by the Department of Mathematics. To enrol, you must request MAT123H1S on ROSI. Complete instructions on how to request a course is in your Registration Handbook. When you request the course, you will receive an "interim" status. The Department will review the interim list and assuming you have fulfilled the requirements listed above, your status will either be approved (APP) or refused (REF).

If you are approved, no further action is required and your full-year "parent" course will be removed from your record.

If you are refused, then you do not meet the criteria for the course. If you have started attending classes in this course you must stop immediately. Furthermore, your "parent" course will remain on your record.

Once you are enrolled in the Reprise Program, you may NOT drop the course and try to go back to the "parent" course.

The "parent" course is a full year course and the deadline to add Y courses on ROSI was late September.

How to Enrol in MAT124H1Y

Assuming you have passed MAT123H1S, you can proceed to enrol in MAT124H1Y. The results of the first Reprise courses will be made very soon after the final exam has been written and will be posted by the instructor.

The process for requesting the course is identical to the instructions for requesting MAT123H1S listed above. The Department will either approve or refuse your request based on whether you have passed the initial Reprise course.

The last day to request MAT124H1Y is May 14, 2012 (tentative).

Dropping Reprise Courses

The deadline to drop MAT123H1S without academic penalty is March 11, 2012. Since there are enrolment controls for both courses, to drop the course you must make this request in writing to Donna Birch of the Department of Mathematics, room BA6291. You must do so by Sunday, March 4, 2012.

The deadline to drop MAT124H1Y without academic penalty is July 20, 2012 (tentative).  To drop this courses you can do this yourself on ROSI. A request in writing is NOT required.
