Algebra and Geometry Seminar

The seminar is devoted to classical and modern questions of algebra and geometry. Most talks are two-hour informal talks. Comments and discussions are highly encouraged.

Abstract:
Consider reduced, pure-dimensional, complex-analytic space with isolated singularities. Two basic invariants, measuring how bad is the singularity, are the Milnor number and the singularity genus. In some cases the Milnor number is easy to compute, e.g. for hypersurface singularities (more generally for isolated complete intersections). For plane curve singularities both invariants can be computed from the (embedded) resolution tree. In more general cases no general method seems to exist. I will describe a very simple, yet powerful method that in some (higher dimensional) cases allows to compute these invariants using the resolution (by blowups or by other birational modifications.)
