The amoeba solitaire
On the first day of class back in September I proposed a simple game that,
although apparently unrelated, can be solved using calculus. It was the
amoeba solitaire. You can read the statement of the problem here
(pdf),
and the solution here
(pdf). I
recommend that you try the problem for yourself before reading the
solution.
Handouts
In October, and by some students request, there was an extra lecture (not required, and on material that you will not be tested on) about the formal definition of a limit (i.e. "epsilon-deltas"). Here is the handout for that lecture.
On April 1st I gave students a fake problem. To my surprise, students were not amused. Sorry, I won't do it again.
